Fourstones was – and remains today – a village some four miles north-west of Hexham, up the hillside above the left bank of the River South Tyne. The river was shallow, with a rocky bed, and unsuitable for navigation. Prior to the industrial revolution, coal extracted from the hillside was therefore carried away by cart or pack-horse for local consumption.
